What is a Bidet?
Bidet is a personal cleansing method utilizing a stream of water, which is more hygienic and beneficial to the use of toilet paper. The word bidet was first used in the 15th century to refer to the pet ponies kept by the French royalty. During the 19th century the Europeans developed a porcelain cleaning device for contraceptive and purgative (cathartic) uses, which was called a bidet for its shape resembled those ponies.
Over time, its use has evolved more into a personal cleansing method, paralleling the improved sanitation and the heightened sense of personal hygiene in the modern world. Unlike conventional bidet that requires major plumbing work, modern bidets simply attaches to your existing toilet.

Bidet Articles
Bidet is a very well known term in US. This is a kind of low-mounted plumbing fixture or a low sink. It is basically used for cleaning the external genitalia, anus and surrounding skin to avoid cases of infection after urination.
When you hear of the bidet you usually hear of the bidet that is attached to your toilet, but there exists another type of bidet. This bidet is a hose that hangs next to your toilet. When you are done using the bathroom you take the hose and wash yourself with it. Read more
With the handheld bidet comes better control. Since the hose is not attached to the toilet you can maneuver it any way you want. Instead of moving around trying to find the right angle, you can just move the bidet around and get a better wash from it.
There are many types of bidets out there. Most of them are the premium bidets that cost a lot of money, but if one just wants to use the bidet without paying a lot for it, they can just get a non-electronic one. In this article I will give 5 reasons why the non-electronic bidet is sometimes better than the premium electric bidet.
Long used in Europe and Asia, these personal hygiene fixtures are being adopted in the US by people who need help using the bathroom Read more
Bidet Frequently Asked Questions
What is a bidet?
A bidet (pronounced "be-day") is a device that cleans one's rectal or genital area by directing a gentle stream of water.
Where did it originate?
The French originated the toilet fixture known as the Bidet, which incidentally means "Straddle the Pony" in French, designed well over 150 years ago as a compliment to the water commode, i.e. "Crapper". It's sole purpose was to enable women to "douche" and cleanse vaginally.
What are handheld bidets?
These are our basic models. Handheld bidets are small and light enough to be operated while you hold it in your hands. Attach to your existing toilet and provides the same benefits as the larger bidets, but without the special features.
What are bidet seats?
Bidet seats are toilet seat attachments that replace conventional toilet seats, and include basically one or two bidet nozzles for cleaning both men and women. These innovative additions to your conventional toilet combines the sanitary functions of a bidet, with the comfort of a heated water supply, heated seat and other special features.
Are they really worth my money?
Sanicare bidets offer exceptional value at a competitive price. The water pressure and the temperature (of the seat and the water) of each bidet nozzle are adjustable. Built-in thermostats and a memory system control the temperature and pressure precisely to prevent excessive heating or harm to you or the bidet. With lighted displays and soft-touch buttons placed just where the right hand falls, the control panel is elegantly simple to use – even at night.
The bidet seats have two devices to prevent back-flow, so pressure leaks and water runoff problems are prevented. In addition, the durable plastic is germ-resistant, and the lid and seat are hydraulic for soft, quiet, closing and to prevent harm to you, the bidet, or the toilet basin.
Who uses a bidet?
Millions of people throughout the world use a bidet on a daily basis! Bidets are used by men, women, and children of all ages. Bidets are for anyone who wants to improve their personal hygiene.
Who benefits from using a bidet?
Everyone can benefit from using a bidet. Bidets are especially helpful to: people who are recovering from surgery; people who have physical disabilities; people with dexterity or other problems that limit their range of motion; people who have various medical conditions, such as hemorrhoids, diarrhea, dysentery, difficult bowel movements, or other ailments that involve the rectal or genital areas; people who have developmental disabilities, such as Down's Syndrome, mental retardation, autism, or cerebral palsy; men and women who want better hygiene before or after sexual activities; and women who want more effective feminine hygiene during monthly menstrual periods.
How does the Sanicare Bidet attach to my existing toilet? How is it installed?
Installing the Sanicare Bidet on your toilet is easy and requires very little mechanical skill on your part. Easy-to-follow, detailed instructions are provided when you receive your bidet. Here is an installation diagram.
What tools will I be needing? Will I be also needing a plumber to install them?
Only basic tools are needed: channel-lock pliers and regular pliers. A plumber can be helpful, but is not necessary.
How much time does it take to install The Sanicare Bidet?
Installing the Sanicare Bidet can take as little as 5-10 minutes for the handheld models and 20-35 minutes for the toilet seats. It might take a little longer depending your particular situation.
How durable is the Sanicare Bidet?
The Sanicare Bidet is made of quality materials and is engineered to provide many years of use. The only moving part is the manual trigger valve that controls the flow of water.
What could be more simple? How do I clean the Sanicare Bidets? Are they difficult to clean or maintain?
Using any bathroom disinfecting cleaner, simply spray and wipe your bidet on a regular basis.
Sanicare bidet nozzles are fully retractable and self-cleaning, the seat and lid are germ-resistant polymers, easy to clean with a damp cloth. Abrasives, benzenes, and acid or alkaline detergents are never necessary, and will scratch or discolor your bidet. Generally, there is no high maintenance required on Sanicare bidet products.
Is an electrical outlet needed?
It depends on your bathroom setup and bidet model. Some bidets don’t require electricity to operate (all handheld models, portable models and some bidet seats). For models which need power supply, an outlet is necessary within four feet of the unit (ideal range for all power chord lengths). Your electrician can install an outlet, if one does not exist within four feet of the bidet.
Isn’t it dangerous to have water and electricity together?
Power supplied bidets take every precaution to prevent risks. Most models are made from molded plastic which does not conduct electricity, and a built-in ground protects users from the risks of electrical shock. The circuit board of the bidet is protected, and the casing is waterproof to prevent accidental water exposure (for example, during cleaning).
Is there a warranty for your bidets?
Of course, Sanicare bidets are covered by their respective product warranties. We also warranty the bidets against defects and malfunctions of design or normal operation.
How does the cost of the Sanicare Bidets compare to that of other bidets on the market?
A simple search on the Internet will show you how inexpensive our bidet is compared to most bidets on the market, which can cost up to several hundred dollars!
Will I need to buy anything else in the future?
All bidet models come complete, like water supply adapters and lines, and bolts for connecting it to a toilet. There is nothing more to buy, ever.

Bidet History
The earliest known written reference to the bidet is dated 1710. The bidet originated in France, at a time when full body bathing was done once a week. It was invented to cleanse the 'private' areas of the body, in-between regularly scheduled baths. In 1750, the bidet à seringue appeared. It provided an upward spray through the use of a hand-pump fed by a reservoir.
Until the 1900's the bidet was confined to the bedroom, along with the chamber pot (a bucket that served as a toilet.)
Modern plumbing brought the bidet into the bathroom. Where it sits next to the toilet. Popularity of the Bidet
In continental Europe, the usefulness of the bidet is fully understood and is considered to be as important in the bathroom as the toilet and the tub - no well equipped home is without one.
However, most Americans have never seen a bidet. Those who have, generally observed them in upscale hotels, either in the U.S. or in Europe. Rare is the American home that actually has one!
To some, this seems a bit strange, considering the American preoccupation with cleanliness. But the majority of Americans start their day in the shower, rather than visit the bathtub once a week. Thus the use of the bidet for personal hygiene has not yet taken on an important role in America.
It is interesting to note, that American plumbing manufacturers are among the top producers of bidets, and almost all of these are exported to other countries.
Who uses them and why?
The bidet can and is be used by both men and women. Bidets offer the user a hands-free and supposedly superior water wash in place of the wiping and occasionally irritating action of toilet paper.
An invaluable aid to person hygiene, the bidet is gaining popularity among senior citizens, the disabled and those with impaired motor functions. or incontinence. Bidets are also used for sitz baths. A sitz bath (also called a hip bath) is a type of bath in which only the hips and buttocks are soaked in water or saline solution. Its name comes from the German verb sitzen, meaning to sit
A sitz bath is used for patients who have had surgery in the area of the rectum, or to ease the pain of hemorrhoids, uterine cramps, prostate infections, painful ovaries, and/or testicles. It is also used to ease discomfort from infections of the bladder, prostate, or vagina. Inflammatory bowel diseases are also treated with sitz baths.
In America, the bidet has developed an aura of indelicacy, largely due to its primary use - to clean the private body parts. But the bidet can be used for anything a wash basin is used for. From foot baths, to hand washing clothes, to soaking tennis shoes!
The Modern Bidet
Today's bidet is a sit-down wash basin. Usually made from vitreous china, it is styled to resemble the shape of the toilet. The bidet is placed next to the toilet in the bathroom, an arrangement meant to encourage personal hygiene.
There are four basic types of bidets
Over the Rim - This model is fitted with a standard faucet. The bowl is filled with water the same way you fill a sink. This is generally the cheapest and simplest type to install. Having a rimless bowl makes easy to clean.
Heated Rim (flushing rim) - This unit has Hot/Cold handles on top, but the water enters the bowl below the rim of the basin.
Spray - The more popular models are equipped with a spray, which provides a gentle shower. There are two type of sprays:
Vertical which has a fountain jet in the center of the bowl, and horizontal, which has special over the rim spout that delivers a horizontal stream of water.
There is a possible risk of water becoming contaminated from back siphonage created by spray fittings. These units must be installed using backflow prevention devices, and should be installed by a plumbing contractor. As usual, consult local building codes before installing.
Combination - Some models combine the heated rim and a vertical spray option in one unit.
Styles - Bidets are offered in a host of styles, from the traditional to the contemporary, matching the toilet.
How do you use them?
The conventional bidet is designed to be sat upon, legs astride, facing the taps (faucet). While sitting, you simply turn on the water. When the temperature is to your liking, you increase the pressure to direct a stream or spray of water towards those spots in need of cleansing.
Some models are designed with seats, and the user sits on the bidet, the same way they would on a toilet. Controls for these models can be at the side, the front, or the rear of the unit. A wall mounted grab bar helps the user get up and down easily. To make it more convenient for the user, place a shelf near the bidet to hold soaps, wash clothes and towels.

Bidet Testimonials
Dear SanicareBidet
I have to congratulate you and thank you for your prompt service.
I know that the defect on the part that you sent me was a manufacturing problem and you could not have known of it. For shipping the replacement promptly withing hours of my e-mail to you (on a Sunday) you certainly deserve a medal, if there is one for "good customer service". I installed the bidet and is working perfectly. I would be happy to post this message on your website (could not find where).
Thanks Again.
Mehran

I tried figuring out how to add a testimonial, but failed. So here's an e-mail in case you're adding to the list of comments.
We received the BioBidet 1000 in a very timely manner. It was fairly easy to install. It does take a little bit of practice to figure out exactly where to sit/move slightly so that the spray hits in exactly the right place! The unit worked great for about 10 days. Then it would regularly get stuck and the nozzle wouldn't come out or the water wouldn't be heated. We filed an e-claim and voila, about a week later, another unit arrived with a shipping slip to return the defective one. It's been a few days since we've used the 2nd one and so far, so good.
A comment about the BioBidet 1000: when I called the Sanicare sales office to discuss the differences among 3 of the units they sell and which one would be best for us, the salesperson was very helpful. He asked several questions and based on my husband's "elimination" issues, he recommended the BioBidet 1000 since it's the only one which has a pump for a more forceful enema feature. And it really works!

Good Morning!
We just bought a hand-held Italia model. The item was exactly as depicted on the website and was mailed to us within 4 business days. We also received helpful, couteous service when we called asking about the product. This is the first time I've used your site and I'm impressed.
I'll be recommending you for sure!
Thank you,
-Vasu Vazirani
I just can't thank you enough for the travel bidet. I've had a number of surgeries over the years that have made it difficult to almost impossible to achieve a clean and fresh feeling. I'm finally liberated by your awesome product. It's a perfect size to take anywhere with me. I have told all of my friends about the travel bidet and now they are buying one, too! It's great for people with back trouble... or those that have had surgeries to the hands or shoulders. Many thanks to you and the travel bidet.

Hello Sanicare,
I received my bidet, installed it and worked great. Thanks for the free sanicare travel bidet. It's good to have it...because I also need to wash myself anywhere I go (not just in my home :-) . Thanks again. I really do enjoy my bidet. I recommended your company to my friend interested in getting the traveling bidet.
Jenny C.
Hi I received the replacement unit today and immediately tested it's operation. It is nice to see that it actually pumps a stream instead of a dribble. And no water in the battery compartment is a definite plus.
I thank you very much for your very prompt attention and service.
Best regards Larry
